It is amazing, Maddon will back Shelton because they have the same ideas, but it's ironic, that Rod Carew in 2 days of working with Upton could help him get better, when Shelton couldn't fix the problem as his coach for 18 months. The rest of the Rays continue to suffer under Shelton's watch.

Crap. I don't think my comment went through. Anyhow, when I was reading through all the postseason recaps and anger, I came across your site and got a kick out of it. I'm still not sure if I'm willing to say Maddon "sucks," but the man does exasperate me, and I find myself asking if he takes away as much from a game as he brings to it.

That said, I wrote up something on the end of the season that I thought might amuse you:

I'm not sure if I think Maddon sucks, but he does totally exasperate me at times, and I keep trying to figure out how much he takes away from a game and if it equals what he brings to it. I honestly don't see how anyone that really understands the game of baseball could say that Joe Maddon sucks. He is one of the best coaches in MLB and you seriously think he sucks? And so what that he changes the lineup. why keep the same hitter leading off when he is in a slump? Maddon still keeps the core of the order the same. He's a great coach and I don't see any reason to disagree with what he does, which is win. So really, why exactly do you think he sucks?

Agree that the hitting has gone south for most of the season, even though they score alot of runs, they seem to score them all in a handful of games, and not many in the games they lose. That's another whole different story to bring up, and may very well lead to alot of the coaching staff being let go after the season.

Agree with everything you said about Maddon. But this is just as much the fault of management. While making all the right moves last season, they have made all the wrong moves this year. Every bullpen move has failed, as well as every position player move. Obviously, the stocks are failing, making every move financially motivated. So overpaying Kazmir & Burrell are disasters, which cannot be overcome, and which lead to other bad, but necessary moves like trading Kazmir. Which leads to bringing in one year wonders to the pen like Nelson, Shouse, & others, who have no track record of long term success. So ownership has to share the blame of the bullpen with Maddon, who definitely mismanages it. But this does not even compare with Maddon's blunder with Upton, first keeping him lead-off through part of August, and now making brainless excuses for him now. But once again management blew it, by not arranging a Delmon Young type trade for him earlier, while he still had trade value. A trade for a good set-up man would have been possible even a couple of months ago. Now they will be stuck with him. And the worst move was falling for the one good year by Navarro, and not drafting Posey, who would already be their starting catcher. So a management sucks also blog would be most appropriate.

You must really love Maddon after the Sonnanstine loss to the Red Sox Tuesday night. He was "pleased" with their effort. 3 errors and 14 strike outs in the game!!!! Pleased???? In the end Maddons decision to stick with Upton in the leadoff position the first 3 months of the season cost us too many games. He's a great manager for a young rebuilding team but terrible for one thats expected to win.

You guys are nuts if you think that article supports JMS's case. First, Bill James says there isn't any evidence for the 100 pitch limit, but he also admits he doesn't know what the limit is. They give two great examples of potential hall of famers who flamed out after throwing an excess amount of pitches or innings (Fidrych and Busby).

Again, you can't argue against the key points. Today's bullpens are better than todays starters, so there is little reason to keep most starters in for a few extra pitches. Those extra pitches are certainly the highest risk pitches the starter will throw, so you need to show a significant gain from leaving them in.

But you can't. Every year, bullpens outpitch starters. Managers should probably go to the pen sooner, not later.

Again, the massive cost of losing a young pitcher to injury is far greater than any possible gain from having him pitch another half inning a start.
